Abhyanga Massage, an ancient Ayurvedic ritual that cleanses the body and balances the doshas, is now offered as a signature service at The Red Door Spa at The Wigwam.

An exotic, holistic treatment rooted in India’s ‘Science of Life’ philosophy, Abhyanga uses specially selected oils and gentle, rhythmic techniques to calm the nerves and drain toxins.

The results vary based on which ‘dosha’ – Vata, Pitta or Kapha – is out of balance, but general benefits include increased circulation to nerve endings, toning of the muscles, calming for the nerves, lubrication of the joints, increased mental alertness, softer skin, increased levels of stamina and deeper sleep.

The service begins with a brief survey to determine which dosha may be out of balance. According to Ayurvedic philosophy, doshas are the manifestations of elemental forces – earth, air, fire, water, ether – in the physical body.

Special oils, formulated for each dosha, are then lightly massaged into the skin, focusing mostly on the pressure points on the hands, arms, feet and legs. The combination of the oils and the short, rhythmic strokes increase energy flow through the seven chakras and dissolve both stress and toxins.

Abhyanga is offered in 50- and 80-minute sessions and cost $135 and $195 respectively. The 80-minute service includes a cleansing foot soak to begin the relaxation.
